Porta  Nuova

The present-day monument was built in 1583 on the site of a pre-existing 15C construction, to celebrate the arrival in Palermo of Charles V of Habsburg, Emperor and King of Sicily, after his victory in Tunis against the Ottoman Turks, in 1535. Situated about halfway along the straight-lined Cassaro, the main thoroughfare of the old Punic-Roman settlement, it has a double monumental façade in Manneristic style with a wide barrel-vault, a small loggia and a majolica-tiled pinnacle.
